Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house close to the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were arrested at the site and another man who escaped after the blast was located not long after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location showed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the property was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the siblings who had secured themselves into the home. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He believed the detonation had happened on a level above the access point and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
