Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the early candidates in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend following the team's ten-game without a victory start to the top-flight season.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have previous associations to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would pose a possible obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his playing career - is considered a strong contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have support from the club directors as they begin the process of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
