Heat and Trail Blazers Secure First Victories Following Player Detentions

NBA game action

The Miami Heat recorded 86 opening half scores against the Grizzlies

The Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their first NBA game after player Rozier was detained over alleged unlawful sports betting.

Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the allegations.

But, the Miami team were focused as they scored 86 first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."

Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is important to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."

Portland also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Arrests

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, league head Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We then looked into that situation and were open regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.

"So, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.

"Moreover two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
