Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
