The gravest projected effects of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by scientists, including a searing 4C increase in average temperatures to a 2-metre increase in ocean levels. Another scenario predicts a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and energy demand.

These impacts, certain ones are linked to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as unlikely but possible. The team said that these models addressed a shortfall in forecasting that had rendered the UK not ready for worst-case results.

A further series of worst-case scenarios maps the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the end of the century. These indicate that temperatures could soar in some months by up to 6C higher than average, while rainfall could be three times normal levels.

The chance of the worst-case outcomes coming to pass remains uncertain due to unknown factors about what steps will be enacted to address climate change and how the climate system will react. This research was compared to security threat evaluations or resilience checks for the banking sector.

Major Scenario Highlights

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action collapses or if powerful amplifying effects like the tropical forests dying unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heat domes and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is slowing down and losing stability due to climate change. A complete failure starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be drastically changed," explained the professor.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A increase of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if polar ice in the polar regions melt abruptly, submerging coastal cities and towns. In contrast to the other scenarios, this risk is already recognized by planners.

An independent advisory body has stated that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the dangers for 4C. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "insufficient" by certain experts.
