UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
